Flanders Road Bridge

Project data

Location: Durban , South Africa

Fountain Civil Engineering completed the widening of the existing Flanders Road Bridge, at Mount Edgecombe, Durban in April 2017.

Requirements

The bridge needed to allow for expected traffic flow for the new Cornubia shopping centre. It was widened from two lanes to four lanes, with major on and off ramps.

Customer's benefit

Each abutment and pier had their own equipment, saving a lot of time. The project took place on a busy stretch of road so it was important to not impact traffic flow. PERI managed the delivery of equipment so as to not clutter the site; and 13 m long I-beams were used to keep the three-lane traffic access on both sides of the road.

PERI plays a very important role in the formwork industry. They provided us with good advice and service while the concrete results from their products are fantastic.

PERI solution

PERI provided solutions for the triangular box-out in the centre of the 8 m high pier, as well as the sloping sections around the pier. Special wedges were manufactured using VARIO to create the slope.
